Police responded on Monday, Nov. 2, to an incident involving a patient exhibiting aggressive behaviour in the emergency department at Markdale Hospital, Brightshores Health System said in a statement.
Brightshores said the incident was witnessed by patients, families and visitors, and that it "sincerely" apologizes to those affected.
The hospital system credited its emergency department team for its "professionalism, judgment and quick actions" in what it called a challenging and unpredictable situation. Staff followed established procedures to help protect patients, visitors and one another while emergency responders mobilized, the statement said.
"Violence, threats and aggressive behaviour toward healthcare workers are not acceptable," Brightshores said, adding that safety remains its highest priority. Support is being provided to team members.
Brightshores said it is undertaking a comprehensive review of safe rooms across the organization to make sure they continue to support staff safety, quality patient care and emergency response.
Citing patient privacy, Brightshores said it is unable to comment further. As of Wednesday afternoon, no public police release about the incident had been issued, and the Banner is not aware of any charges.
Brightshores operates six hospitals in Grey and Bruce counties, including Markdale Hospital.
