Bruce County is urging seniors to set up a personal support network and a written emergency plan before an emergency happens.
In a release Monday, the county said family members, friends, neighbours or caregivers who could help should know their role, and it recommends giving them written instructions because emergencies can be stressful and confusing. Seniors without family or friends nearby may wish to connect with local seniors' groups, community organizations or service clubs, the county said.
The county recommends sharing the plan with the support network and practising evacuation together so medications, assistive devices and essential supplies can be gathered quickly. Plans should include:
- Assistive devices such as canes, walkers and hearing aids, and extra batteries
- Eyeglasses, dentures and other personal care items
- A supply of medications, with a list of each one's purpose, dosage and schedule
- Contact information for family members, physicians, caregivers and the dispensing pharmacy
Assistive devices and larger mobility equipment should be labelled with the owner's name and phone number, the county said.
"If you are a senior, creating a support network and including important information and instructions in your emergency plan can make a significant difference," said Ray Lux, Bruce County's emergency management coordinator.
