Oct. 31, 1882: Holland's ploughing match. Holland township held its ploughing match on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 1882, on the farm of its reeve, W. Howey. The Markdale Standard called it "a decided success." The day was fine and the crowd large, though there were fewer entries than the year before and the ground was "rather too dry" after a long drought. The judges came from Sullivan, Sydenham and Holland. At supper, a Chatsworth man gave the reeve a driving whip from the committee, since Howey planned to move to the North West in the spring.
