This Day in History: Oct. 27, 1887, Flesherton's new school
Red brick, a belfry, 15-foot ceilings and brown walls: the Markdale Standard tours Flesherton's new school.

Oct. 27, 1887: Flesherton shows off its new school. The Markdale Standard of Oct. 27, 1887, printed its correspondent's tour of Flesherton's new public school. It was red brick in the "Roman Gothic" style, 81 by 64 feet, with every classroom on the ground floor, 15-foot ceilings, and a cupola and belfry on the roof. The walls were washed brown, the writer noted, because experts of the day blamed white schoolroom walls for colour blindness. The Standard hoped Markdale would follow Flesherton's lead.
