Nov. 4, 1886: Sir Richard Cartwright speaks at Flesherton. "We must all go and hear Sir Richard Cartwright to-day at Flesherton," the Markdale Standard urged on Thursday, Nov. 4, 1886. Many did. A week later the paper reported nearly 400 people at the Reform rally for East and South Grey, "a good sprinkling of whom were ladies." North Grey MP Benjamin Allen and South Grey MP Dr. George Landerkin spoke, as did the two ridings' nominees. Cartwright, the Liberals' leading finance critic and a former finance minister, then spoke for nearly three hours.
