Grey Bruce Public Health has issued a drug alert after testing found that a yellow or gold substance being sold as fentanyl contained carfentanil, CK News Today reported Thursday.
Carfentanil is an opioid and large-animal tranquillizer. The health unit said it is about 100 times more toxic than fentanyl, according to the report.
The health unit's alert had not been posted on its Opioid Alerts page as of Thursday afternoon.
What the health unit advises
Grey Bruce Public Health reminds people who use drugs not to use alone and to have a sober person present, CK News Today reported. In an overdose, call 911 and give naloxone every two to three minutes until the person starts breathing, and stay until help arrives. The health unit noted that the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act provides legal protection for people who seek help during an overdose.
People can get their drugs tested by calling or texting Supportive Outreach Services (SOS) at 519-379-8743.
Where to get naloxone
The health unit says naloxone kits and training are free at the Health Unit, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with no appointment or prescription needed, and training is also available at local pharmacies (GBPH Naloxone Program). Ontario lists other places to get a free kit at ontario.ca/page/where-get-free-naloxone-kit.
