Grey Bruce Public Health has issued an overdose alert after three suspected opioid-related overdoses in Owen Sound and Saugeen Shores last week.
The health unit says it was notified of the three suspected overdoses, which happened Oct. 14 and 15. The suspected substance was yellow fentanyl in one case and is unknown in the others, according to the alert, dated Oct. 16 and posted on the health unit's Opioid Alerts page. The health unit shared the alert again on social media Monday morning.
The alert does not say whether anyone died or give details about the people involved.
What public health advises
Grey Bruce Public Health's alert urges people who use drugs to follow these harm-reduction practices:
- Don't use alone. Have a trusted, sober friend present, or call or text the National Overdose Response Service (NORS) at 1-888-688-6677 if using alone.
- Get overdose prevention training and carry a naloxone kit. The health unit says naloxone is available at Grey Bruce Public Health during regular office hours and at pharmacies in Grey-Bruce.
- Take extra caution if mixing substances. Mixing can increase the risk of harm and drug poisonings.
- Go slow. Start with a low dose and increase slowly, especially if trying something new or restarting use.
- Use only new supplies and don't share them. Supplies are available at the health unit and community partners.
- Get your drugs tested. Call or text Supportive Outreach Services (SOS) at 519-379-8743.
"Overdose is a medical emergency. Call 911," the health unit says.
The health unit also notes that the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act provides some legal protection for people who seek emergency help during an overdose.
