A historic ship's anchor will be the centrepiece of the new roundabout at Highway 21 and Bruce Road 13 (Turner Street) in Southampton, the Town of Saugeen Shores said.
The anchor came from the Erie Stewart, a two-masted schooner that wrecked in a storm in 1907 after striking the Island Dock, according to the town. Divers recovered it in the summer of 1957.
The town said the anchor is being moved from downtown Southampton with help from the Marine Heritage Society. It has been sandblasted and recoated, and its deteriorating wooden cross has been replaced. It will sit on a concrete pad in the middle of the roundabout.
"Southampton's history is closely tied to Lake Huron, and this anchor is a meaningful way to honour that connection," Mayor Luke Charbonneau said in the town's announcement.
The roundabout replaced a two-way stop and included underground water upgrades, the town said. The project was funded through the Ministry of Transportation's Connecting Link Program.
