Grey County's short-term shelter program has moved into winter operations to add space during the coldest months, the county said Tuesday.
On average, 47 motel rooms are available each night in winter, according to a county media release. They include rooms at the county-owned and operated former motel in Owen Sound and at other motels in Grey County.
The county says capacity is usually increased from Nov. 1 to March 31, but may be adjusted depending on temperatures and conditions.
"Grey County winters can be harsh, especially for those without a safe place to stay," Anne Marie Shaw, the county's director of community services, said in the release.
The county says Housing Case Coordinators work with people using the program to connect them with services, plan for housing and look at options for permanent housing. The county also supports drop-in programming at Safe 'N Sound Grey Bruce and the newly launched overnight shelter in Owen Sound.
According to the county, the program provided 9,324 nights of short-term housing in 2025 and supported 366 adults and 59 youth aged 16 and younger. The average stay was 25 days, and 126 households moved into self-contained housing at the end of their stay last year, the county said.
More information about the program is available at 519-376-5744.
