Times are tough right now, and supper still has to get on the table. Each week, The Banner Table will make one meal for a family of four from a handful of ingredients, priced from that week's local flyers. This week everything comes from the Owen Sound No Frills and Zehrs flyers: Zehrs has a 10-pound bag of potatoes for $2, and No Frills has Ontario green cabbage at 99 cents a pound. The oven does most of the work.
What it costs
| Ingredient | Amount used | Price used (flyers, Oct. 22–28) | Cost used |

Buying the full packages costs about $25.48 plus the cabbage, which No Frills sells by weight (its flyer lists heads at 2.8 to 3.2 kg, or roughly $6 to $7 at 99 cents a pound). Most of the potatoes, carrots, onions, cabbage and oil will be left for later meals.
How to make it
- Heat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Lightly oil two rimmed baking sheets.
- Cut the scrubbed potatoes into walnut-sized chunks, the carrots into thick coins and the onions into wedges. Toss them with 2 tablespoons of oil, salt and pepper, spread them over both pans and roast for 20 minutes.
- Meanwhile, cut the cabbage into wedges about 2 cm thick, leaving a bit of core on each so they hold together. Brush them with the last tablespoon of oil and season.
- Stir the vegetables, then add the cabbage and the sausages, spaced apart. Roast 25 to 30 minutes more, turning the sausages once, until they're browned and the vegetables are tender with crisp edges.
Food safety: Health Canada says sausages made from ground pork must reach an internal temperature of 71°C (160°F). Check the thickest one with a thermometer rather than going by colour, and reheat leftovers to 74°C (165°F).
Allergens: Packaged sausages can contain wheat (gluten), soy, mustard or sulphites, so check the label. The No Frills sausage price is for selected varieties, so check the label for the flavour and meat, too.
Stretch it, swap it, save it
- Cheaper sausage: FreshCo in Owen Sound has frozen hot or mild jumbo sausages at $11 for 1.4 kg on its flyer through Oct. 28, about $1.23 less per kilogram. Thaw them in the fridge first.
- Stretch it: Add another pound of potatoes (about 20 cents) and slice the sausages before serving to feed five or six.
- No cabbage? Use more carrots or onion.
- Leftovers: Chop and fry them for breakfast with an egg on top, or simmer them with a can of beans and water for soup.
Prices checked Oct. 22, 2026 in the Owen Sound No Frills (1020 10th St. W.) and Zehrs (1150 16th St. E.) flyers, valid Oct. 22–28 (the Zehrs olive oil price runs to Nov. 14), and the FreshCo (2125 16th St. E.) flyer for the sausage swap. Prices change weekly and may differ at the shelf.
