Sidebar: Southgate upgrades Dundalk transfer station
Neighbouring municipalities are investing in their waste sites, too

Chatsworth's neighbours are working on their waste services, too.
The Township of Southgate says its Dundalk Transfer Station will be under construction for about five weeks as part of an ongoing project to upgrade waste services, according to a notice posted on Southgate's website Oct. 14.
The Dundalk site will be closed on Tuesday, Oct. 20, so operations can focus on the upgrade. The Egremont Transfer Station will be open that day instead, and both stations return to regular hours after the 20th, Southgate says. Unless otherwise posted, Dundalk will stay open during the rest of construction, but with reduced capacity. During construction it will accept only garbage, recycling, dirty wood and e-waste. Only passenger vehicles will be allowed on site, and trailers won't be permitted.
Southgate's notice does not give the cost or the details of the upgrade.
Closer to home
Chatsworth shares its own waste site. The township and the Municipality of Grey Highlands jointly manage the Holland-Markdale Waste Disposal Site, where the two municipalities opened a jointly purchased waste shredder this spring, according to a May 12 Grey Highlands news release. The release says shredding bulky items on site reduces the volume of material going into the landfill.
Meanwhile, Grey County's Joint Municipal Services Committee is studying waste services across the county's nine member municipalities. Recommendations are expected before the end of 2026, SarniaNewsToday reported on Oct. 1.
