Parrish & Heimbecker will permanently close its Owen Sound grain terminal on Dec. 18, 2026. P&H marketing manager Monika Robertson confirmed the date to Bayshore Broadcasting News, saying the decision is part of the company's "ongoing evaluation of its grain network and long-term infrastructure needs."
Six workers will be affected, the United Food and Commercial Workers union told the Owen Sound Sun Times, Bayshore reported. Bayshore also reported the company cited financial reasons.
The harbourfront elevator opened in 1925, replacing CPR elevators that burned in 1911. P&H runs it through its subsidiary Great Lakes Elevator Co. Ltd. and has been its sole owner since 1956, according to Bayshore and the Sun Times. The company has not said what will happen to the site.
In a Facebook post, the Community Waterfront Heritage Centre said the elevator's "century of operation will continue to be a celebrated part of local history."
